Medical Colleges and Availability of Seats for MBBS in India
- India has almost equal number of private and government medical institutes. There are over 550 medical colleges in the country and of these total colleges around 285 are government-funded and remaining 270 are private.
- If we observe carefully and compare these 2 sectors in terms of MBBS seats, we find that about 43,000 seats are from the public/government medical colleges while others 40,000 from the private colleges. The total MBBS seats in the academic session 2022-23 sums up to around 83,000.
- During the last decade, about 243 medical colleges have opened up in different part of India.
- Also, if we look for the top three state which have maximum MBBS seats in the country, Karnataka comes first in the list by having about 9345 MBBS seats. Then come Maharashtra at second position with 9000 seats and Tamil Nadu with 8000 seats.
